How frequently do I need to see you?
Typically, one session per week during the beginning phases of counseling is recommended to establish "traction" and begin to experience results. Some clients request two or more sessions per week initially, if they are experiencing particularly difficult distress and/or want to make significant changes quickly. I also see individuals and couples for 2 hour sessions, half-day, and full day sessions as well. As counseling progresses, the frequency of sessions changes as well.

How long should I expect to be in counseling*?
Some people experience significant change very soon--even during the first session! However, typically counseling lasts 8 to 12 sessions, but there is a wide range of variation. Sometimes people may return to their counselor periodically for a "tune up" (1 to 4 sessions) when they need to reconnect to their goals or shift back into flow and health. Initially, the free 15 minute consultation is a chance for you to share your concerns, issues, and goals; to discuss how I may be of help; and for you to to see if we are a "good fit" working together. Likewise, I am assessing if I am a "good fit" for you based on my professional experience and understanding of your issue or concern. If there is a good fit between the client and therapist, meaning a felt sense of trust, empathy, and understanding is experienced by the client, there is a foundation on which growth and change can build. No one therapist is the right fit for everyone and it is important that you find a therapist with whom you connect.
